An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. A film columnist for WAG Magazine, Sam's moviegoing expertise has been profiled in the New York Times and he was a featured guest on VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live.

Passaic County Rallies Around Softball Player Battling Cancer Sofie Stokes' toughest battles are usually on the softball diamond. But now she faces an even bigger fight. Stokes, a Totowa resident, was diagnosed with b-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July. She has undergone two surgeries and begun chemotherapy. Stokes' father, Nicholas, is a physical education teacher and coach. A fundraiser has been set up to assist the family with medical expenses. Kentucky Woman Had Gun At Secaucus Red Roof Inn: Police A 38-year-old Kentucky woman was arrested and charged with possessing a handgun at a Red Roof Inn at Secaucus on Sunday, August 13, authorities said. At 11:35 a.m., police were patrolling the area near the hotel at 15 Meadowlands Parkway when they observed a black Chevrolet Equinox idling in the parking lot for an extended period of time, Police Chief Dennis Miller said. Burlington Opening New Location In Ramsey Burlington is opening another store in Bergen County. The retailer, formerly Burlington Coat Factory, will be opening a location in Ramsey this fall at the Interstate Shopping Center at 235 Interstate Shopping Center, it announced. A specific opening date will be announced later. The company is headquartered in Burlington Township and currently operates 46 stores in New Jersey. Jersey City Rallies Around Boy Facing Life-Threatening Illness Overseas Luca Gonzalez, a 13-year-old Jersey City resident, was visiting family in Switzerland when he suddenly fell critically ill and had to be hospitalized. Gonzalez was diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax and has undergone several surgeries. The hospital in Switzerland is refusing to accept his insurance, since he is an American citizen. Sunglasses Totaling Nearly $1K Snatched In Strong-Arm Robbery At Newport Centre: Authorities A man made off with three pairs of sunglasses worth $952 in a strong-arm robbery at Newport Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 9, authorities said. At 9:30 p.m., police were called to the Sunglass Hut, Kimberly Wallace-Scalfione, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office said. An employee said he told a man the store was closed, but the man forced his way through the front doors, shoved the employee and stole the sunglasses, Wallace-Scalfione said.
