Malanowski's new book "Commander Will Cushing: Daredevil Hero of the Civil War," was recently published by W.W. Norton. Cushing was a complex individual who was expelled from the Naval Academy because of "a talent for buffoonery."  Despite being expelled, Cushing enlisted during the Civil War where, at just 21 years old in October 1864, he sank a Confederate ironclad warship while standing in an open boat. North Castle Voters Overwhelmingly Reject Ward System Proposal NORTH CASTLE, N.Y. -- Voters in North Castle overwhelmingly said no to switching the town council to a ward system. More than 85 percent of voters voted no to the ward referendum, 2,286 votes to 399 votes, according to unofficial results from the Town of North Castle.
