Automated license plate readers are being used in parking lots at some major retailers, including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, Target, and Costco, according to multiple reports.
The systems, known as ALPRs, use cameras and software to capture license plate numbers from vehicles as they enter, leave, or pass through parking areas.

A passenger was seriously injured when a driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a tree on Long Island, police announced.
Joseph Michael Uhl, 31, of Coram, was driving a 2004 Jeep SUV northbound on Ocean Avenue in Ronkonkoma, when he fell asleep and the vehicle left the roadway, striking a tree at approximately 3:08 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, according to Suffolk County Police.
Uhl suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, police said.
