AUBURN, Mass. – As 2012 comes to a close, The Auburn Daily Voice will recap the top 10 stories of the year this week.
The Auburn High School Rockets completed their dominant season on Dec. 1, winning their fifth-straight Super Bowl and solidifying one of the greatest dynasties the greater Worcester area has ever seen.
By crushing Tantasqua High School 33-7 on Dec. 1, the Rockets tied the longest Super Bowl streak in Central Massachusetts history with St. Peter-Marian High School, which won five consecutive titles from 1992 to 1996.
Auburn went 13-0 on the season and will go into the 2013 season with a 21-game winning streak. Just how dominant were the Rockets this season? Behind a powerful offensive line, they outscored opponents 468 to 84 in the 13 games this season, averaging 36 points a game and allowing just 6.5 points a game.
Here are the 13 games in review, with links for the game stories:
Game 1: The Rockets started the season off with a bang at home, blowing out Shrewsbury, 28-6. Fourth-down touchdowns were key for Auburn in the season-opener.
Game 2: Different week, same result. Auburn dominated Holliston High School, 35-0, as running back Tyler Desjardins scored three touchdowns.
Game 3: St. Peter-Marian gave the Rockets a tough battle. The 34-22 Auburn win was the closest game the Rockets had all season, and it could have gone either way in the fourth quarter.
Game 4: The Rockets got back to their dominant selves with a 36-0 whipping over Millbury High School. Auburn pulled its starters at the beginning of the third quarter.
Game 5: Shepherd Hill High School ended Auburn’s 41-game winning streak in 2011, but the Rockets exacted revenge with a 35-6 beat down.
Game 6: Auburn had its third shutout of the season, crushing Leicester High School, 34-0. Desjardins and fullback Bob Sivret led the way in the romp.
Game 7: The Rockets fell behind in a game for the first time all season, but Auburn came back in a big way, torching Tantasqua, 30-7. Desjardins sprinted for four touchdowns.
Game 8: Desjardins continued his season-long scoring party with three touchdowns in the 27-0 victory over Grafton High School. It was the Rockets’ fourth shutout of the season.
Game 9: Northbridge High School's passing attack came to town, but Auburn’s defense stepped up with five turnovers and safety Tim Bryan returned an interception for a touchdown as Auburn cruised 39-7.
Game 10: It was a shocker to see Westborough High School leading 7-0 early in the game, but that didn’t last long. The Rockets responded with 46 straight points, winning 46-7.
Game 11: Auburn couldn’t have ended the regular season much better with a 42-8 feast on Thanksgiving over Oxford High School.
Game 12: The Rockets advanced to the Super Bowl with a 49-14 snow bowl win against Hudson High School in the playoff semifinal. It was the most points Auburn scored all year.
Game 13: Auburn capped off its impressive season with its fifth-straight Super Bowl, pounding Tantasqua 33-7. Head coach Jeff Cormier received yet another Gatorade shower.
