NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – On the morning of Jan. 1, while some nurse New Year’s Eve over-indulgences of one sort or another, others will begin 2013 with a healthy run.

The inaugural 1st Day 5K is the brainchild of MRA Multisport of Northbridge, the husband and wife venture of Megan and Alex Rogozenski. The couple has three children ages 9, 7 and 4.

Featuring a 5K run and 2.5K walk, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Operation Graduation, a parent group that raises money throughout the year to fund an all-night party for graduating Northbridge High school seniors.

The business is three-pronged, Rogozenski said. His wife coaches and trains, they lead a multi-sport club and he is an event planner of road races and triathlons.

Club members train together for endurance events such as triathlons and also travel together to competitions.

“It’s always more fun when you do it with someone else,’’ Rogozenski said.

The club has about 40 members and is growing.

Their goal is to bring more events like triathlons to the Blackstone Valley.  “We have to travel upwards of a couple of hours’’ to compete, and many of those events focus on just one type of sport, he said.

“We want to cater to all triathlon needs. We want to do more,’’ specifically getting triathlon events into the Valley.

Rogozenski said his hope is the race and the partnership with Operation Graduation will become a “marquee event in future years.’’ Doing that will have a couple of benefits, it will bring quality races and showcases local businesses.

Police will close Linwood Avenue to traffic for the race and Operation Graduation volunteers will handle water stations.

Same day registration and post-race activities will be held at the Gray Barn, 2 Elm Place.

Registration opened on Dec. 1 and as of Dec. 11 more than 100 runners had already signed up. The first 300 runners will receive 1st Day 5K beanies, Rogozenski said.

Rogozenski believes it is the only Jan. 1 race in the valley and he hopes that will be a big draw to runners. It is a USA Track & Field sanctioned event and will be timed by Race Wire.

The cost is $30. Registration is at 10 a.m., the race begins at 11 a.m.

Race sponsors include Blackstone Valley Physical Fitness in Linwood and Cedar’s in Bellingham, but additional sponsors are welcome. Potential sponsors should contact Rogozenski or call 774-272-1767.
