AUBURN, Mass. – Do you have a kid who wants to learn how to ice skate or play hockey? Well if you do, then head to Horgan Arena in Auburn this week for the Junior Sharks 10-week instructional programs.
Children ages 4 and older can learn to skate or learn to play hockey with the Worcester Junior Sharks Youth Hockey League, beginning Saturday at the Daniel S. Horgan Memorial Skating Rink.
“We welcome anybody to come out,” said Richard Carr, league president. “The focus is for the kids to have fun and meet new friends, and that’s what brings them back.
“Our organization has steadily grown, and that’s a reflection of the tremendous coaching staff with great experience,” Carr added.
The one-hour skating program is at noon Saturdays, followed by the one-hour hockey program at 1 p.m. Both weekly programs are from Oct. 20 through Dec. 22.
The skating program is for those who are “just starting out on skates or those who need a little more practice and instruction,” according to a program's flier. “Skills taught are balance, forward skating, backward skating, stopping, turning and more.” The $50 tuition includes a Junior Sharks hockey jersey.
The hockey program teaches the “basic rules of hockey, teamwork, sportsmanship, positioning, stick and puck control, passing and shooting, while maintaining a focus on skating,” according to the flier. “It’s designed for those skaters who have progressed beyond the basic skating skills and have a desire to learn the basics of playing hockey.” The $50 tuition includes a Junior Sharks hockey jersey.
Carr said the tuition used to be $100.
“Considering the economy, we felt that cutting the price in half makes it easier for parents,” said Carr, who reached out for grants to help pay for the programs. “And the kids also get a jersey, so it’s a great deal for 10 weeks of instruction and a Junior Sharks jersey.”
Interested participants can register at Horgan Arena, 400 Oxford St., from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. In addition to registering on Wednesday or Thursday, you can register at the rink starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Registration is also available online at www.JuniorSharks.com.
