MILLBURY, Mass. — With fall in the air, it will be a great weekend for high school football, and Central Massachusetts has plenty of great matchups. Check with your local Daily Voice reporters for updated scores and recaps
Southbridge at Grafton: 4:30 p.m. Grafton (3-2) lost a heartbreaker to Northbridge, 28-21, when it was picked off at the 2-yard line with a minute left. John Coughlin added a pair of touchdown runs for the Indians who boast one of the best defenses in the league.
Leominster at Algonquin: 7 p.m. Algonquin (1-4) lost to Hudson, 34-20, last week. The Tomahawks were led by Stephen Roy and Tim Keville, who each ran for a touchdown. Keville also threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Brendan Dagle. The Blue Devils (3-2) lost to Wachusett, 19-14, last week and were unable to score in the second half.
St. Peter Marian at Wachusett: 7 p.m. The Mountaineers (3-2) beat Leominster, 19-14, as quarterback Scott Beardsley threw for a touchdown and rushed for another. Junior linebacker Owen Gibbons had two interceptions during the pivotal fourth quarter.
The Guardians (3-2) beat Milford, 14-8, last weekend when Zach O'Connor recovered a botched snap in the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Burncoat at Millbury: 7 p.m. The Woolies (3-2) have been shut out two weeks in a row after starting 3-0. They'll be looking to get back on the winning track and hope to return leading rusher Ross Sudar this week. Burncoat (0-5) lost to North, 22-17, last week and is still looking for its first win of the season.
Leicester at Auburn: 1 p.m. Auburn (5-0) blew out Shepherd Hill last week, 35-6, as Tyler Desjardins ran for 103 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for the Rockets. Auburn, with perhaps the largest offensive line in Central Mass., is increasingly tough to stop.
Leicester (4-1) shut out Millbury, 30-0, as the Wolverines struck paydirt on their first two offensive plays and never looked back. Matt Levins was the player of the game for Leicester, with six carries for 79 yards, a touchdown run and a TD catch, a blocked punt to set up a score and a forced fumble.
Nipmuc at Northbridge: 1 p.m. Northbridge (5-0) is led by QB Matt Phelan. Last week he led a come-from-behind win over Grafton. In the first half, Phelan led a touchdown drive with less than 45 seconds remaining. Phelan led a 61-yard drive for a go-ahead score and Northbridge never trailed after that.
Nipmuc blew out St. Bernard's, 47-13, as Kyle Braile had 228 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for the Warriors.
St. John's at St. John's Prep: 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers (4-1) lost a tough one to Shrewsbury, 51-46, despite a furious 25-point fourth quarter.
