AUBURN, Mass. – The Auburn Legion baseball team had a tough start to the week, losing two close games, but they've played well in the Zone 4 Mini Tournament, as they won two straight games and advanced to the finals against Milford.
Auburn came up one run short against Milford on Sunday, losing 5-4. Monday, Auburn was defeated, 7-5, by Shrewsbury.
But Auburn turned its week around with victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the mid-season tournament.
Auburn, the three seed, defeated Framingham, the six seed, by the score of 13-2 on Wednesday. Then in the semifinals on Thursday, Auburn beat Shrewsbury, the two seed, by the score of 3-0.
The finals against Milford, the one seed, will take place on Friday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at Fino Field in Milford.
In the game against Milford on Sunday, Ben Libuda, Mike Vaitkunas and Jason Vrusho pitched for Auburn.
Milford went ahead 2-0 in the second inning, but Auburn pushed across two runs in the third to tie it up.
Steven Wallace started the rally with a one-out single, followed by a Nicholas Cardoni single. Then Mykal Diaz lined a single to score Wallace, and Tyler Bostek hit a sacrifice fly, bringing home Cardoni.
But Milford took a three-run lead with a sixth-inning rally to make it 5-2.
Drama ensued in Auburn’s last at-bats in the seventh inning. John Kewley led off with a double, and Cardoni drove him in with a single to make it 5-3. Bostek hit an RBI single to bring home Cardoni, cutting the lead to one run. However, Auburn couldn’t push across another run.
Auburn now gets a chance for revenge on Friday night when they head to Milford for the finals.
