AUBURN, Mass. – The Auburn High School field hockey and girls soccer teams keep on winning, pulling out tough victories this week against Tantasqua Regional High School.
The field hockey squad improved its record to 11-0-2 after squeaking out a last minute win over Tantasqua on Oct. 11 in Fiskdale, while the girls soccer team also pulled out a close victory at home, moving to 8-0-4 on the season.
The Rockets field hockey team scored with two minutes remaining in the game to break the scoreless tie. Junior Jaime McNamara scored unassisted to put Auburn ahead 1-0, which was the final score.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Palace made two saves in the shutout victory. She now has 10 shutouts on the season for the undefeated squad.
The girls soccer team also remained undefeated with a tight 1-0 win over Tantasqua. Senior Liz Carlson tallied the game’s only score with junior Kayla Almstrom dishing out the assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Fahey made seven saves in the shutout victory.
Boys Soccer Comes Up Short
The boys soccer team has now lost two straight games, falling to Tantasqua, 3-1, on Oct. 11 in Fiskdale.
It was a competitive first half, “in spite of sloppy soccer” from Auburn, according to head coach Christopher Bailey. The game was tied at one at the half.
But Tantasqua “outplayed us in nearly every aspect of the game,” Bailey said. “Ball possession was key and Tantasqua's possession was dominant.” Tantasqua pulled away in the second half to win by two goals.
Andy Lidonde had a goal and an assist, while Erik Messier and Tyler Cave added goals to lead Tantasqua. Junior Jake Frotten scored the only goal for the Rockets.
Cross Country Meet Postponed
The tri-meet against Shepherd Hill and Southbridge scheduled for Oct. 10 was postponed due to rain.
The meet at Shepherd Hill High School was rescheduled to Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. The runners will be racing on Oct. 13 at Wachusett.
