AUBURN, Mass. – The Auburn High School field hockey team allowed its first goal of the season Monday night, but the team pulled out a tough win against Shrewsbury at home, giving head coach Bethann Cormier her 100th career victory.
Auburn prevailed, 3-1, in a physical contest in which the pushing from Shrewsbury was “worse than I’ve ever seen,” according to Auburn assistant coach Katie Senior. Auburn improved to 7-0-1 with the victory, and Cormier reached the century milestone.
“I’m just so fortunate to have outstanding coaches and players over the years,” said Cormier. “The middle school coaches have helped prepare the players for the high school level, and the administration has been so supportive over the years.”
Cormier’s 100th victory did not come easy against the tough Division 1 squad.
Freshman Shannon Hynes gave Auburn the lead 10 minutes into the contest; junior Paige LaPearl dished out the assist.
But Shrewsbury responded 10 minutes later with a goal, the first against Auburn in eight games this season off senior goalkeeper Sarah Palace. Palace finished the game with 10 saves and another win.
With the game tied in the second half, sophomore Jordan Lavallee scored Auburn’s second goal, receiving the assist from junior Jaime McNamara.
Then, with four minutes left in the game, Shrewsbury only had 10 players on the field due to a red card that removed a player for unsportsmanlike conduct. Auburn took advantage as junior Mary Grace Judge gave Auburn the 3-1 lead and secured the win; junior Jackie Matthews distributed the assist.
“The kids played hard and kept their composure all game,” Cormier said. “We maintained our composure and played a solid, clean game. I’m so proud of the kids.”
Girls Soccer Dominate
Auburn junior captain Kayla Almstrom tallied three goals and an assist as Auburn crushed Bartlett, 6-0, on Monday night at home. Senior captain Liz Carlson scored a goal and dished out three assists for the Rockets. The girls improved to 4-0-2 on the season.
Boys Soccer Tie
Freshman Zachary Randall had 10 saves for Auburn as the squad tied Bartlett, 0-0, Monday afternoon in Webster. Auburn moved to 3-3-2 with the draw.
