AUBURN, Mass. – The Auburn High School cross country teams had strong performances in the final home race of the season — the final home race ever for seniors — on a beautiful fall day at Auburn Middle School.
The boys squad beat both Bartlett and David Prouty in the tri-meet on Wednesday, while the girls dominated David Prouty but were barely edged out by Bartlett.
The boys cruised against Bartlett, 15-50, and prevailed against David Prouty, 24-36. The two wins improved Auburn to 10-1 on the season as the Rockets ride a nine-meet winning streak.
“The regular season couldn’t have ended better for us,” said senior Matt Lavallee, who has finished first overall in 10 meets.
Lavallee led the way again on Wednesday, finishing the 2.96-mile course in 16:49. The other runners to place for Auburn included Matt Healey in 17:41, Thomas Gannon in 18:02, Kyle Quitadamo in 18:23, John Bylund in 18:24, Jacob Mikolajczyk in 18:44 and Kevin Foley-Foster in 18:50.
“It’s nice to run on our home course. This was only our second home meet all season,” Lavallee said. “We had more competition today, which produced better times and set personal records.”
Other Auburn finishers included Aidan Foley-Foster in 19:06, John Leger in 19:07, Ryan Malakie in 19:30, Tyler Ducharme in 19:34, Colin Gallaway in 20:05, Zack Peterson in 21:20, Mike Maio in 21:30 and Patrick Callahan in 22:06.
The team now heads to the Southern Worcester County League (SWCL) championship meet at Webster Lake at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.
“This is where it gets fun, facing everybody who’s bringing their best,” Lavallee said. “We’ll be going for it. We’re going to put our best foot forward and try to take the title.”
On Wednesday, the girls swept David Prouty, 15-50, but came up just short against Bartlett, losing 30-27. The girls moved to 7-4 on the season with the win and loss.
