AUBURN, Mass. – The Auburn High School boys’ cross country team has been on a roll this season, riding a nine-game winning streak into Wednesday’s Southern Worcester County League (SWCL) championship meet. The team was looking to come home with a first-place trophy, but the runners settled for second while posting impressive times.
The Rockets had an average time of 16:55 on the 2.91-mile course at Memorial Park in Webster, but Shepherd Hill was a bit better, posting an average time of 16:28. Auburn finished second out of 10 teams with 61 points, while Shepherd Hill posted a winning score of 42 points.
Senior Matt Lavallee, who has been leading the Rockets all season, finished first on the team on Wednesday. He covered the course in 16:12, which gave him a fifth-place finish in the SWCL.
The Auburn runners to follow Lavallee were sophomore Matt Healey in 11th place (16:56), sophomore Tom Gannon in 12th place (16:58), junior Aidan Foley-Foster in 17th place (17:14), junior Kyle Quitadamo in 18th place (17:16), junior Kevin Foley-Foster in 21st place (17:26) and junior John Bylund in 25th place (17:32).
The girls’ squad, 7-4 in the regular season, placed seventh out of 10 teams in the championship league meet. They had 165 points, while Northbridge, the winner, dominated the meet with 38 points.
Freshman Riley Simmons led the team with an 18th-place finish out of 68 runners. She covered the 2.91-mile course in 21:43.
Following Simmons for Auburn was junior Jessica Powers in 38th place (22:35), junior Amber Abderrazzaq in 40th place (22:50), junior Sarah Wilcox in 42nd place (23:24), junior Michelle Dufault in 43rd place (23:27), junior Katie Grogan in 45th place (23:43), junior Kathryn Coughlin in 46th place (23:57).
Field Hockey Loses First Game
The Rockets have been stellar all year, but their undefeated run came to an end Monday with a 3-0 loss to Oakmont.
It was only the third game all season in which Auburn allowed a goal. The loss dropped Auburn’s record to 13-1-2, and the win improved Oakmont to 11-0-2.
