AUBURN, Mass. – The fall sports season came to a close last weekend, so it was time Tuesday night to honor the Auburn High School athletes who excelled this year in cross country, soccer, field hockey, golf, cheerleading and football.

Athletic Director William Garneau led the annual fall letter night at the high school to “celebrate the accomplishments of our varsity athletes.” The fall coaches handed out varsity letters to first-time recipients and bars to students who have made the varsity team multiple times.

For some student-athletes, this was the last time they would ever receive a fall letter. Garneau said the senior class has played a huge role in the teams’ successes over the years.

“All of what has been accomplished could not have happened without strong senior leadership,” Garneau said. “This is a pretty special group of young men and women. You guys are going to be sorely missed. Hopefully you’ve created some great memories here and had a great time.

“And don’t forget, you’re always going to be a member of our family and make sure you come back to visit after graduation,” he added.

Garneau also thanked the coaches for “all the time, dedication and sacrifices they’ve made for our student-athletes.”

Auburn High School athletes and coaches recently received the District E Sportsmanship Award, according to Garneau. The Rockets’ opponents nominated Auburn for this award.

“To me, as the athletic director, that award is as special as a Super Bowl, a state championship,” Garneau said. “That’s a pretty special thing when you’re being honored by your opponents.”

In addition to handing out the varsity letters and bars, Garneau announced the Southern Worcester County League All-Star selections:

Girls’ Cross Country: Riley Simmons

Boys’ Cross Country: Matt Lavallee, Aidan Foley-Foster, Kyle Quitadamo, Matt Healey, Tom Gannon

Golf: Tyler Lamonda, John Kewley, Mike Fazio

Girls’ Soccer: Lizzy Carlson, Jordann Hauge, Erin Scanlon, Kayla Almstrom

Boys’ Soccer: Kelvin Okyere, Mike Vaitkunas

Field Hockey: Sarah Palace, Erin Collins, Lyndsey Gabrielian, Paige LaPearl, Jamie McNamara

Garneau also named football players on the Central Massachusetts All-Star team:
