AUBURN, Mass. – A former Auburn resident who moved away after attending first grade here has donated $1,000 to Mary D. Stone Elementary School.

Fred Roccanti, who attended Mary D. Stone before his family moved away before he started second grade, recently contacted Auburn Superintendent of Schools Maryellen Brunelle about making a donation.

Roccanti told Brunelle he had fond memories of Auburn and the Auburn Public Schools. Although Roccanti said he has long supported his high school and college with monetary donations, he said he had not yet done so for one of his elementary schools.

The $1,000 will be used for materials and supplies for the students at Mary D. Stone Elementary School. Purchases will focus on science, technology and engineering to “enhance their units of study in those critical areas,” Principal Elizabeth Chase said.

At the June 27 school committee meeting, members accepted the $1,000 donation. Brunelle will send a thank you letter to Roccanti.
