AUBURN, Mass. — Though there was plenty of twisted metal, no one was hurt when a train struck a tractor-trailer truck on Southbridge Street in Auburn on Monday evening, police said.

At about 6 p.m., the truck driver had stopped over the the railroad crossing near the entrance of the Polar Beverage facility to wait for traffic when a train came through, striking and heavily damaging the right side of the trailer.

No one was injured, Auburn police Sgt. John Kelleher said.

Auburn police detoured traffic around the crash scene, and officials from the State Police truck team responded.

The trailer had to be off-loaded before it could be moved, Kelleher said.

Police did not provide information on the operator of the truck, which is owned by Orange Transportation Services.

jaymac:

A vehicle capable of running through flashing crossing signals and then stopping on the crossing is equally capable of doing the same when gates -- which provide redundant visual information but no real physical restraint -- are down.

Luther Manning:

Heard that there are no crossing gates at that intersection, just warning signals, gates would have prevented this IMHO...
