AUBURN, Mass. - Auburn Fire Chief Stephen M. Coleman Jr. wants residents to know that there are still open spots in the department’s Citizens Fire Academy (CFA), beginning Oct. 10 to help residents better handle emergency situations.
The nine-week Auburn Fire Department program, with classes on Wednesday nights, will cover fire, extrication and EMS training, along with other instruction. There is an optional Saturday program in which interested members can become certified in CPR and first aid.
Coleman said a goal of the CFA is to give residents the opportunity to discover what diverse services the fire department offers the community.
“We want to educate the public about what we do,” Coleman said.
The academy will encourage citizens to return to their neighborhoods and relay to their friends and neighbors the proper procedures to use to become more safety-conscious citizens.
The academy also provides an interactive forum for the Auburn Fire Department and the citizens to share information, which includes live demonstrations.
“There are so many exciting things going on in this department with our training, the various specialty services that we provide, as well as the different divisions that make up the department,” Coleman said. “We want to share that with the public. It’s an opportunity for firefighters and the public to make contact in a different setting.”
The program is open to those 18 or older who live or work in Auburn. Sessions are approximately three hours long and held at the West Auburn fire station, 7 West St.
The academy concludes with a graduation celebration. Class members will receive a certificate of completion from the Auburn Fire/Rescue Department.
