AUBURN, Mass. – The Auburn Police Department found that several motorists did not stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk during safety checks on Auburn Street last week.
Officers paid special attention to areas in front of Auburn High School and the Post Office where a plain clothes officer attempted to cross using the crosswalk while a uniformed officer waited in a marked cruiser nearby.
Thirty drivers did not stop for the pedestrian in the crosswalk, the officers said. On one occasion, the plain clothes officer was almost struck by a car that illegally passed a vehicle that had stopped for the pedestrian.
The Auburn Police Department reminds motorists that as the school year approaches, these areas of town will be congested with pedestrian traffic. Motorists in all lanes must come to a complete stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
The safety checks were funded by a federal traffic enforcement grant.
