Auburn Man Arrested After Crash Ejects Victim On Route 290

AUBURN, Mass. – A Putnam. Conn. man was critically injured and an Auburn man was arrested on charges of drunk driving after a rollover accident on Interstate 290 in Auburn early Sunday morning, State Police said.

Auburn EMS crews and State Police arriving at the accident scene at 4:36 a.m. near exit 9 and Route 290 westbound found a man ejected from his vehicle, a 1996 Chevrolet. 

Based upon the initial investigation by state police on scene, the operator of a second vehicle, a 2006 Jeep, was identified, located and arrested.  Keith Leblanc of Auburn was arrested by state police and charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of liquor causing serious injury, speeding and a variety of other motor vehicle offenses.

The accident victim's condition was critical, according to the Auburn Fire Department, and he was transported to UMass Memorial Hospital. The current condition of the victim will be updated later today if that information becomes available.

Leblanc is currently being held on $5,050 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Worcester District Court.   

The roadway was closed until approximately 7 a.m. as crews hosed off the highway, cleaned up debris and re-enacted the accident as part of the investigation.

Troopers from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and troopers assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office/State Police Detective Unit responded to assist with the investigation. The Auburn Police Department, Fire Department and EMS also assisted at the scene, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highways Division.
