Obituary: Richard H. Phaneuf, 79

AUBURN, Mass. – Richard H. Phaneuf, 79, formerly of Worcester died on Wednesday, November 14th in his home after an illness.

Mr. Phaneuf is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet M. (Minor) Phaneuf; two sons, Michael R. Phaneuf and his wife Diane of Holden and David P. Phaneuf and his wife Marla of Merrimack, NH; a daughter, Teresa A. Kirdulis of Worcester; a sister, Rose Marie Craft - Boisvert of Orlando, FL; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Richard was born in Worcester, son of the late Joseph and Rose (Lucier) Phaneuf. He is predeceased by a sister, Yvette Yanci.

Dick is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and received a Purple Heart for his service during the Korean War. He worked as a truck driver for many years at the former Ziff Paper Co.

Mr. Phaneuf was a member of St. Peter’s Church and served as president of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and also volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, altar server for funerals, past leader of the youth group and headed Pre-Cana with his wife for several years throughout the Diocese. Dick also spent a good amount of time volunteering for the Boy Scouts Troop #73 and enjoyed playing cribbage.

The funeral will be held on Friday, Nov. 16 from the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, 931 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Veteran’s Cemetery, Bourne. A calling hour will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. in the funeral home before the funeral.
