State Police are investigating a crash on Route 290 in Auburn after a person got out of their moving car and was killed by a tractor trailer.

AUBURN, Mass. — A Shrewsbury woman was killed Monday night after being struck by a tractor trailer on Route 290 in Auburn, police said.

The victim, Catherine Berthiaume, 51, of Shrewsbury, was driving a 2012 Toyota Camry on Route 290 East near the Hope Avenue exit in Auburn, state police said, when she apparently got out of the car while it was moving.

Berthiaume was then struck by a tractor trailer. The Toyota continued to travel about 600 feet before coming to rest against the guardrail, police said.

Police said they do not know why the victim got out of the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor trailer stopped and remained at the scene, police said.

Route 290 eastbound was completely closed for approximately one and a half hours before one lane of traffic was opened to travel. The other lanes of traffic did not open until 8:20 p.m. to allow for investigation of the crash and removal of vehicles.

The crash is still under investigation.
