AUBURN, Mass. - Donald C. Walczak, 75, of Auburn, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after being stricken ill at home.
Donald was born and raised born in Dolgeville, NY, the son of Carl and Ophelia (Lukaseiwicz) Walczak and lived there until he entered the US Air Force, where he served for four years. He especially enjoyed the period he was stationed in Alaska.
Following his departure from the service, Don entered Mohawk Valley Community College, where he would meet his future bride, Mary E. Martin. They married in 1965 and began their married life with a honeymoon trip across the United States. Don and Mary recreated that journey for their 45th wedding anniversary, even staying in one of the same hotels. They lived in the Utica area for several more years, and then in Burlington, VT for 11 years before moving to Auburn more than 30 years ago.
Don began his working career with General Electric, and then he went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service. While at the post office, Don trained to become a Postal Inspector, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. To keep busy during his retirement, Don began working as the caretaker and custodian for Saint Joseph’s Parish in Auburn, a job he held for many years. He loved to travel with Mary, never said no to playing a round of golf, even enjoying a round the day he passed. Don’s greatest love was spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. Don was a member of Saint Joseph’s Parish in Auburn and Saint John’s Parish in Worcester. He and Mary were involved with the Marriage Encounter Program for many years.
Besides his loving wife Mary, Don is survived by his five children; Luke M. Walczak and his wife Cheryl of Oxford, Mark E. Walczak and his wife Kathleen of Milford, NH, Carla M. Gilmartin and her husband Brian of Auburn, Jerome B. Walczak of Easthampton, and Nicole E. Walczak and her fiancé Gerry Tejada of Jamaica Plain; his six beloved grandchildren, Luke T., Lindsey, Autumn and Keith Walczak and Sean and Margaret Gilmartin; and his great grandson, Layton Walczak.
As an only child, Don was glad to become part of a large family and is survived by his in-laws, John L. Martin of Maryland, Edward J. Martin of Las Vegas, Thomas G. Martin of Virginia, Nicholas S. Martin of Washington Francelia T. Rebscher and Bernard C. Martin of Marcy, NY and Bernadette E. Williams of Newport, NY, as well as many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces, and many dear friends.
