WORCESTER COUNTY, Mass. – Gov. Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency as Hurricane Sandy churns its way up the East Coast.
Patrick activated the Massachusetts National Guard in preparation for the storm, which is expected to begin hitting the area late Sunday night. While the storm may be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it makes landfall, Massachusetts is expected to experience damaging winds, widespread power outages and moderate to major coastal flooding, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.
In Central Mass., sustained 30-40 mph winds with gust of 50-60 mph are projected, with MEMA anticipating higher damage in areas with trees that still have foliage. Around Worcester, 3-5 inches of rain is projected Sunday night through Wednesday.
