CENTRAL MASS. — The Patriots may not be in New Orleans, but several Central Mass. bars are expecting even bigger crowds than last year, during Super Bowl XLVII.

"We actually get better traffic when the Patriots are not in it," said Pam Panarelli, manager of Lakeside Grill in Shrewsbury, noting that they are planning a free halftime buffet. "We expect a pretty good crowd this year."

She said that more people seem to plan parties at home when the home team is in the big game.

Several other bars will also offer specials during Super Bowl XLVII. Sean Nace, of JJ's Bar & Grill at 380 Southwest Cutoff in Northborough, said they haven't yet decided on food specials, but they have at least one draw: a raffle for a 51-inch TV.

Any purchase of a Bud Light product will earn a ticket, said Nace.

JJ's will also offer free "football squares" to the first 100 people, which will allow those patrons to win prizes throughout the game, based on the score.

Pepperoncini's, which has locations in Milford and Framingham, will offer $5.99 large pizzas and 35 cent wings throughout the game.

"It's more of an event when the Patriots are in it, but people are still going to watch the Super Bowl," said Pepperoncini's owner Vince Loscerbo. He said they will also raffle off several items.

Nace said he isn't sure whether patrons will be rooting more against the Ravens or for the 49ers, but he has a feeling what they will be focused on.

"They'll probably just be rooting for the squares," he said. "That's usually how it works."
