While the race for president reaches the final 60-day stretch, Republicans and Democrats alike are preparing with their national conventions. Last week, representatives from Central Mass. were some of thousands who flocked to Tampa, Fla. for the Republican National Convention.
Locals at last week’s RNC included State Rep. Kim Ferguson (R-Holden) who acted as a delegate for the state and Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangilidis, who attended as a special ambassador on behalf of presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Ferguson said she was happy to be front and center with the Massachusetts delegation at her first convention.
“They really focused on the message of ‘are you better off today than you four years ago,’” Ferguson said. “I think Romney and Ryan were convincing in their speeches that they would turn the country’s economy around.”
Ferguson also said she enjoyed the other speakers at the convention.
“Ann Romney did a wonderful job,” Ferguson said. “I liked a lot of what she had to say.”
Along with listening to female speakers like Ann Romney and Condoleezza Rice, she also spoke with Gov. Jan Brewer about women in politics like herself.
This year’s RNC was a first for Evangilidis and, he said, will probably be his only since he attended largely to share his personal experience of working with Romney. Evangilidis was sworn in as a state representative in 2002 at the same time as Romney took office as governor.
“I spent most of the time talking about my experience working with Mitt,” Evangilidis said. “I worked with him for four years and understand how efficiently he did his job.”
Evangilidis said he felt Romney gave a successful speech at the convention that focused on jobs and the economy – two issues he sees as most important in the upcoming election.
“We talked about three things at the convention: jobs, jobs, jobs,” Evangilidis said.
Locals at this week’s Democratic National Convention include Diane Saxe of Grafton, Kate Donaghue of Westborough and Kathleen Polanowicz of Northborough. Stay with the Daily Voice to get their convention recap.
