AUBURN, Mass. – The Major David Brodeur Memorial Foundation has announced that its second annual 5K on Sunday will feature Brodeur’s wife and children leading the road race in Auburn.

The Major David “Klepto” Brodeur 5K race/walk will be held at 1 p.m, Oct. 14 at North American Martyrs Church.

“David made the ultimate sacrifice in April 2011 and his family and friends have endured this hardship since that very day,” said Tim Morse, the foundation’s president. “This community will have a huge opportunity to show their support for Dave’s service to this country and really to help his family understand what a true hero we all believe he is.

“It is also a time for his wife Susie and his children Elizabeth and David Jr. to experience the town where David grew up,” Morse added.

The event honors Brodeur, an Auburn native and military hero who died in Afghanistan last year, while serving with the Air Force. The money raised at the race will provide grants to Auburn High School students in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities.

Brodeur, a 1994 graduate of Auburn High School, died April 27, 2011, in Kabul, Afghanistan, at the age of 34. In addition to his wife and children from Colorado, Brodeur also leaves behind his parents Larry and Joyce Brodeur, his brother Todd, his sister Amanda, aunts, uncles and cousins, who are also expected to attend the event on Sunday.

Brodeur was an experienced F-16 pilot and instructor with deployments to Iraq where he flew combat missions during the initial days and months of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and Combat Action Medal, among others.

The Brodeur race will be the third road race in town since May. Runners who participate in the race Oct. 14 and who also did the APA 5K in May and the Jules Run in June will receive a tech T-shirt. Organizers will give out shirts at the Brodeur race for those who qualify.

In addition, the first 200 registrants for the Brodeur race receive a T-shirt plus a post-race meal catered by Outback Steakhouse. Beer will be provided by Harpoon Brewery for all registered runners who are 21 or older.

The registration fee is $25 to run/walk Oct. 14. To sign up for the event, visit the 5K registration page. You can also register on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 12-4 p.m. at the Auburn Fire Station, or from 12-1 p.m. on Oct. 14 at North American Martyrs Church.

Pre-registered runners can pick up numbers and T-shirts at the fire station on Oct. 13 or at the church on Oct. 14.
