AUBURN, Mass. – Local residents who grew up in Auburn will battle it out Friday when the Bay State Brawlers (BSB) compete in a roller derby at Landry Arena in Fitchburg.
A doubleheader kick offs at 7 p.m. with the BSB Brawling Broads taking on the Poison Pixies from Rochester, N.H., followed by men’s derby action with the Mass Maelstrom facing Dirty Dozen of Pioneer Valley.
The Brawling Broads are the BSB’s women’s B travel team, and it includes players who grew up in Auburn. Both Caitlin Rooney McDermott (derby name: Sandy Ravage) and Katie Costello (derby name: Annie Morphs) were brought up in Auburn.
Jaime Hawley, a BSB player, has lived in Auburn for seven years, but she won’t be playing on July 6. However, she said the upcoming doubleheader will be a great event for the public.
“My local friends drive up for the bouts when I play, and there are a couple of girls that grew up in Auburn that their families all come up from Auburn and surrounding towns,” Hawley said. “There is not much roller derby around, so it’s worth the trip.”
Spectators should bring a chair to sit trackside.
