AUBURN, Mass. – If you want to be a part of a fun holiday play this year, then this month is your opportunity to audition for a spot in a community musical.
The Auburn Community Players will be holding open auditions on Sept. 22 and Sept. 25 for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” by Barbara Robinson. The play, which will be performed on Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2, will be directed by Christine Taylor, with musical direction by Randy Bloom.
“I’m constantly hearing from adults and kids that they want more community play opportunities,” Taylor said. “I can’t wait to get a cast and have a fun time with this delightful Christmas story.”
The play is described as an “hilarious Christmas tale”:
“A couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids - possibly the most inventively awful kids in history. Everyone agreed that the six Herdman kids were the worst kids in the world. They lied, they stole, they hit little kids, they talked dirty, and even the girls smoked cigars.
“Sunday School was a safe haven for the other children because the Herdmans never went there. But when the Herdmans show up on Sunday looking for chocolate cake, they hear about the Christmas pageant and decide they want to take part.
“To the dismay of everyone involved, the Herdmans land the main parts in the play. Although everyone expects a disaster, the Herdmans bring a fresh interpretation to the Christmas story, a story they had never heard before. Their interpretation of the tale has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year's pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.”
The auditions will take place at Pakachoag Church at 203 Pakachoag St. The Saturday auditions will be held at 4 p.m. and the Tuesday auditions at 7 p.m.
Rehearsals for the show will take place on Sundays at 4 p.m. and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. There are speaking roles for four men, six women, eight boys and nine girls, in addition to a non-speaking youth ensemble.
