WORCESTER, Mass. – For the director and much of the teenage cast of "Legally Blonde, the Musical," the preparation for this weekend's Hanover Theatre show has been a very perky case of deja vu.
There's good reason for this: Grafton High School performed "Legally Blonde" for its spring musical, a production directed by the Hanover's Meghan Patrick. The Grafton students cast in the show, as a result, have had the show's "Omigod You Guys!" opening number stuck in their heads ever since.
"It's a really fun show," said Patrick, who runs the Hanover's four-week youth summer program. "There are a lot of roles for females and every kid has a moment to be on stage for this show."
The youth summer program draws from communities in and around Worcester and includes actors ages 12 to 18 from Shrewsbury, Northborough, Southborough, Westborough and Grafton.
"There's a lot expected of them," Patrick said. "We're getting ready to put on a show in just four weeks, a much more accelerated pace than for a high school musical. Everyone who is here really wants to be here and they come prepared."
On this particular day, a run-through of the play pauses for a crucial scene: Elle Woods, the spunky sorority girl who is applying to Harvard Law School to win back her boyfriend, shows up on campus with a marching band and cheerleaders to convince the dean to admit her. Nearly the entire cast is on stage and the scene is repeated several times to ensure the cast members are hitting their marks.
Rachel McGown, who plays Elle, didn't even appear to break a sweat as she ran through the high-energy number.
"We're expecting this to be a very professional production," Patrick said.
Behind the scenes, most of the stage crew consists of Grafton High School students. The stage manager is Zach Tucker, a 2011 Grafton High School graduate who has spent the last year at Emerson College and working on various Boston theater productions.
"Legally Blonde" is at the Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge St., Worcester at 2 and 7 p.m Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10.
