AUBURN, Mass. – Want to learn how to ice skate or play hockey this winter? Now is the time to register for winter classes at Horgan Arena in Auburn.

The Daniel S. Horgan Memorial Skating Rink at 400 Oxford St. N. will hold eight-week classes for all ages and skill levels, including “Learn to Skate” and “Ice Skating Essentials.” Winter season classes begin the week of Dec. 31.

Here are the different classes that Horgan Arena is offering in its winter session:

Learn to Skate (ages 3-adult): There are Learn to Skate programs for tots, youth and teen/adult. Tot Learn to Skate instructors use songs, games, toys and other methods that cater to the learning styles and development of these young skaters. The Youth Learn to Skate program delivers the basics of skating, such as gliding, pushing and striding, in ways that 6 to 12-year-olds find challenging and enjoyable.

The Teen/Adult Learn to Skate program is for skaters 13 years and up who wish to learn how to skate or improve their basic skating skills. Instructors encourage the development of balance, coordination, mobility and other skills at a comfortable pace for each individual.

Pre-Hockey: For skaters who have mastered the elements in Learn to Skate Tot or Youth, Pre-Hockey teaches skaters the proper way to put equipment on and transitions newly-learned skating skills to wearing full equipment and hockey skates.

Pre-Skating: For skaters who have mastered the elements in Learn to Skate Tot or Youth, Pre-Skating introduces balance, coordination and mobility and helps build confidence in skaters as they progress through each level.

Ice Skating Essentials: For skaters who have mastered the elements in Pre-Skating or Pre-Hockey, the Ice Skating Essentials program will teach forward and backward stroking and crossovers, three-turns and Mohawks, advanced stops, edges and more. Both ISI Alpha through Delta and USFS Basic 3-8 skills will be introduced to prepare skaters who may eventually pursue competitive endeavors.

Figure Skating 101: For skaters who have mastered the elements in the Ice Skating Essentials program, Figure Skating 101 classes teach the mechanics of figure skating. Participants learn the jumps, spins, gliding moves and edgework taught in both ISI and USFS Freestyle levels.

Registrants will save $10 when they register online for the programs.
