AUBURN, Mass. — Spirits were high Thursday at the Auburn Senior Center at the start of its new Zumba Gold class.
Taught by certified Zumba instructor Myriam Lamour, the low-intensity but high-energy dance fitness class is designed for older active adults.
"The fun Latin-inspired dance class includes merengue, salsa, rock n' roll, tango and more," said Lamour. "It is a safe, easy-to-do and effective total body workout."
Lamour said the activity is great for the mind, body and soul, "but most importantly, your heart."
According to Lamour, Zumba's benefits include improving cardiovascular capacity, overall muscular strength and endurance, prevention of osteoporosis, flexibility and range of motion, and cognitive function.
Additionally, it promotes enhanced self-esteem and general well-being, empowered and enhanced quality of life and relaxation and increased opportunities for social interaction, she said.
More than 20 participants hit the dance floor for the first session Thursday. Classes are held from 9:15 to 10 a.m. every Thursday at the Auburn Senior Center. The cost is $3 per class.
