What To Do In Auburn This Week

AUBURN, Mass. – The special fall Town Meeting has 22 articles prepared for Tuesday night, highlighting a busy week in Auburn. For more of what's happening in the area, see our Events page.

Monday, Oct. 22

Fire District S.A.F.E. Trailer at Pakachoag School: 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. Members of the Auburn Fire Department are spending time this month in all the elementary schools, teaching children the importance of fire safety in the home. The students will learn important skills, such as stop, drop and roll, and how to plan an escape route from their home. Third-graders will get to check out the fire district’s S.A.F.E. (Student Awareness Fire Education) trailer. Pakachoag Elementary School, 110 Pakachoag St.

Tuesday, Oct. 23

Special Fall Town Meeting: 7 p.m. There will be 22 articles for Town Meeting members to vote on. Town department heads and residents have submitted articles to the Board of Selectmen, which then votes to put the articles on the meeting agenda. For example, the school department will be asking for Town Meeting members to “appropriate a sum of money from General Fund revenues to the Stabilization Fund,” which would be used for purchasing 6.6 acres of land from the Masonic Lodge for a new middle school on West Street.           

Auburn is a Town Meeting Representative Government, in which the Town Meeting members vote. The town has 120 Town Meeting members elected from five precincts. The public is welcome to speak about an issue Oct. 23, but only Town Meeting members may vote. Auburn High School, 99 Auburn St.

Explorers: Mad Science: 4:30 p.m. Kids interested in science should head to the library. Test tubes will be bubbling and the burners will be aflame. The event is open to kids in grades 3 to 5. Registration is required. Auburn Public Library, 369 Southbridge St.

Wednesday, Oct. 24

Runners Head to League Championship: 2 p.m. The high school boys and girls cross country teams compete in the SWCL championship meet. Webster Lake, Memorial Beach Drive.

Thursday, Oct. 25

Field Trip to Sturbridge Village: All day. Fifth-grade students from Julia Bancroft Elementary School head to Old Sturbridge Village for a fun-filled field trip. 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge.  

Friday, Oct. 26

District 1 PTO Fundraiser: 2:30 to 6 p.m. Parents can pick up their purchases all day. All items will be at their child's school. The annual fundraiser supports field trips, family events and student enrichment programs. Julia Bancroft Elementary School, 3 Vinal St. or Bryn Mawr Elementary School, 35 Swanson Road.

Troop 53 Popcorn Fundraiser: 4 to 8 p.m. Auburn Troop 53's annual fundraising effort. Proceeds support the many activities, events and overnight trips planned for the year. Walmart, 742 Main St., North Oxford.
