Leafing Scarsdale: Pack 'Em Up, Move 'Em Out

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – There's a reason it is called fall.

A quick look around will confirm that it is, quite clearly, that time of year. Each gentle breeze fills the air with colorful leaves floating slowly to the ground – or, more precisely, to your lawn.

As residents break out the rakes and the leaf blowers, Scarsdale is preparing to pick up and cart away the erstwhile foliage. From Oct. 24 to Dec. 2, leaves will be collected by the village every 20 working days. Depending on weather conditions, at least one collection is scheduled each month for each street.

A pair of leaf vacuum trucks operate in each of the village's seven leaf pickup sections. Progress on the leaf collection schedule is displayed on a weekly basis on Scarsdale's Government Access Channel 75 and Verizon Channel 43, as well as Scarsdale's website.

But there is a catch: If you want the village to take your leaves, you have to pack them up properly. Leaves may not be raked into the street. Residents may only rake leaves (no branches, grass, dirt, stones, etc.) to the curb line or to the edge of pavement. Leaves may also be placed in biodegradable paper bags and placed at the curb for weekly collections by sanitation crews.

Branches must not be placed in leaf piles and must be tied in separate bundles less than five feet long and 18 inches in diameter and can weigh no more than 50 pounds. For pickup of individual branches larger than three inches in diameter, residents need to contact a private carter.

Residents and landscapers with permits may bring leaves to the Village Recycling Center, 110 Secor Road, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Permits can be obtained at no cost at Village Hall on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Leaves may be brought to the Recycling Center loose or in biodegradable bags.

Biodegradable, recyclable paper bags are available for $4 in lots of five on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Village Hall. Bags may also be purchased at the Recycling Center.
