Students Offer Message: Don't Shake Babies

Students at Brien McMahon High School were greeted by something different as they passed between classes Tuesday morning. A dozen people held large posters, each bearing a few words from an imaginary story of a girl who shook her crying baby. The signs were held by members of the Senators Community Foundation, part of the Center for Youth Leadership, a group of more than 125 students who work to raise awareness of social issues.

“This was our storyboard project for Shaken Baby Syndrome,” said Carly Cordovano, a member of the youth leadership executive board. “The signs told how a girl might shake her baby, and people’s possible reactions.”

Shelby Farrell, another youth leadership board member agreed. “We also want to make people aware of all the potential medical problems from shaking a baby,” she added.

Such public displays are frequent activities of the group. In the past, members have staged activities to bring attention to human trafficking and dating violence, among others. “We just try to pop up unexpectedly to shake up the students, and raise their awareness,” said Bob Kocienda, the group’s adviser.
