New Canaan Shops See Value of Web Presence

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Dan Mulhern sees the value of being on the Internet. Like many business owners, Mulhern is happy to have a website for M Milestones, which recently relocated to Forest Street.

“They may not purchase, but they find that you have that service and come in to see the brick and mortar store,” Mulhern said. “People still like to view what’s available and it gives them an impression of your business. It is one of the key vehicles for people to find you and get the address of your establishment.

A recent market demand study recommends all downtown New Canaan shops develop websites. The study, conducted in part by BFJ Planning, suggests that web presence will go far in promoting shops, especially with competition from merchants in neighboring towns around.

BFJ consultant Frank Fish said New Canaan merchants should do more of what they’re already doing and a website will be just as important. Web sales are not huge now, but “they will probably increase,” he said. Fish said the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce can assist with getting every shop downtown a website.

The market demand study also recommends promoting targeted use of new technology and social media, including services like Foursquare and Groupon, and quick request, or QR codes, to let shoppers know about deals going on.

Market Demand Study Committee Chairman John Goodwin said he likes the idea of public-private partnerships in the promotion of New Canaan.
