Brian Skanes always wanted to have the kind of job he enjoyed going to every day. And after almost 20 years as Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Mt. Kisco, he says he's gotten his wish.
In my job, all I have to do is walk outside my office and see the kids to know why Im doing this. I never feel like Im going to work, said the Mt. Kisco resident.
The organizations mission is to provide a safe and fun environment for kids to spend time after school. While participating in a slew of sports, music and art programs, they are taught to be respectful and tolerant of each other. Skanes said his daily duties include supervising his staff, fundraising and working with his Board of Directors.
I wanted to do something with meaning. With the Boys and Girls Club, the kids are here because they want to be, he said.
Skanes has helped jump-start various renovations at the Mt. Kisco facility since he began in 1994. It now boasts an eight-lane pool, 12 acres of land, two playgrounds, a storage garage, fields, and a summer camp.
Skanes has been involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for the past 38 years. Before starting at the Northern Westchester location, he was the Regional Vice President of the Northeast Region of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club for Binghamton, New York and in Billerica, Mass. He was also the Program Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Salem, NH.
Skanes now sees himself staying in Mt. Kisco another few yearsa surprise coming from someone who clearly likes to change his surroundings often.
There are still plenty of challenges left here for me, he said.
