Arrested Man Puts Up a Fight With Norwalk Police

NORWALK, Conn. – A man who tried to break into his ex-girlfriend's house to get his belongings early Sunday was spotted by a neighbor, who reported a burglary in progress, Norwalk police say.

Police arrested a suspect, who demanded that his handcuffs be removed so he could beat up the officers who were arresting him. He continued to be combative at police headquarters, where he was Tasered and put in shackles, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said.

Derrus Leavitt, 32, of Milford, was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree assault, interfering with an officer, criminal attempt, disorderly conduct and second-degree unlawful restraint. Bond was set at $200,000.

Someone called police who had seen a man breaking into a rear window of a home on Scribner Avenue near Best Buy at 12:42 a.m. The suspect had left when police arrived, but officers were given a description, which they say matched Leavitt when they stopped him at 95 Scribner.

He was sweaty and his hands were bloody from cuts on his fingers, Cotto said. He said he was walking to get his van at Best Buy, but he was headed in the other direction and couldn't say why his hands were cut.

There was blood on the shards of glass from the broken window at the home. Leavitt was arrested and became irate, yelling profanities, Cotto said. At headquarters, he was kept in handcuffs because of his agitated state. He was told he would have to take his shoelaces out or take his shoes off, and he refused to do either. Police tried to grab his wrists. He tried to break free and was wrestled to the ground. He kept fighting and was Tasered. He kept fighting after his legs were shackled.

Police learned he was dating the owner of the home. She said she had kicked him out two weeks ago after an argument because of his drug problems. She said he had been acting crazy Sept. 15, putting her head in a headlock and punching her in the face.

He was taken to Norwalk Hospital after being Tasered. He was treated and released.
