Norwalk Mom Hit With Broom; Dad Arrested

NORWALK, Conn. – An argument over child care allegedly escalated into a bloody assault Sunday. Norwalk police say a man grabbed a broom and hit his wife in the head in front of their young children.

Jose Martinez-Cruz, 31, of 31 Lexington Ave., was arrested and charged with injury/risk/impairing morals, second-degree breach of peace, criminal violation of a protection order and second-degree assault. Bond was set at $100,000.

The victim ran out of the building at about 3 p.m., her face covered in blood from a cut on her forehead, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said. Her husband had left early that morning. When he came back, she yelled at him for leaving her alone all day with the children, ages 3 and 1.

Neighbors called 911. Martinez-Cruz came out shortly after police arrived and was handcuffed.

Cotto said police found furniture overturned in the apartment, blood on the walls and a bloody broomstick. A relative who lives in the apartment said he had heard the argument but hadn't seen the fight. The victim was taken to Norwalk Hospital.
