Stamford Laments Loss of Boatyard

STAMFORD, Conn. — About 300 boats will lose their homes Oct. 31 when Brewer Yacht Haven West closes so property owner Building and Land Technology can remediate the land and redevelop the site.

“This is like pulling the only car repair place out of the city,” Sgt. Peter Wolff, head of Stamford Police Department's Marine Division, said during a special Harbor Commission meeting Thursday night.

He said closing the marina will displace the boats and their owners. But it also will affect others who rely on the boatyard — including the Stamford Police — for the travel lift, fuel and other services. Wolff said he had problems with the police boat last week and took it to Brewer. Within 20 minutes, he was back patrolling Long Island Sound. Without the marina, Wolff said won't know what to do.

The developers decided not to renew Brewer’s lease because the property is “severely contaminated” and in need of remediation, said John Freeman, a representative for the developer. He said he was not sure what steps will be taken to keep Stamford Harbor safe after the marina was closed.

“We’re not exactly sure how we go from Point A to Point B,” he said, explaining that he will speak with others at the firm and know more in a week. Freeman was also unable to address the future use of the site, saying it was too early to begin planning.

Mayor Michael Pavia called the meeting to open a dialogue between the commission and the developers. At the close, the commission agreed to write a formal letter to Building and Land Technology about all of the concerns mentioned about shutting down the marina.
