Turkey Burgers Not Always Healthiest Choice

According to Sue Teoli, of Fitness Together in New Canaan, turkey burgers aren't always what they're cracked up to be, particularly when you're ordering them in a restaurant. "You might think you're eating a low-calorie and healthy option, but you might be better off with sirloin," says Sue. Turkey breast is an ultra-lean protein, but "most restaurants don't serve ground turkey breast. They serve ground turkey in their burgers, which likely contains the more fatty dark meat and even skin."

Adding insult to potential caloric injury is the fact that restaurant-made turkey burgers are often enhanced with mayonnaise and/or cheese. This could explain why they always taste so much better than yours. (Well, better than mine, that is.) Sue adds, "If you can't be certain the turkey burger is made from skinless turkey breast, order a grilled chicken breast sandwich or grilled fish sandwich sans mayo and cheese."

Or, now and then, you can just order a burger. Sometimes it really hits the spot.
