Yorktown Science Research Student is Regional Semifinalist

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Yorktown High School Science Research Program student Priya Mohindra has been named a regional semifinalist of the Siemens competition in math, science and technology.

Mohindra is the only student in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties to achieve this honor, and will present her research at Carnegie Mellon University on Nov. 18 and 19.

“We are thrilled with this news and are so proud of the work that she has accomplished to have reached this point with her three year research project,” said Michael Bluegrass, director of the Yorktown Science Research Program.

Mohindra’s project focuses on making PET imaging, used for body scans, more specific in detecting cancer at the cellular level, rather than at the anatomical level.

“I have wonderful guidance from Dr. Jason Lewis and Dr. Brian Zeglis of the radiation department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,” she said.

As a participant in the competition, Mohindra has the potential to win $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories for original research in math, science and technology.
