PELHAM, N.Y. Pelham police responded to a call at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday from a resident on Maple Avenue who said that he got into a verbal dispute with a stranger about masonry work the man did at his home.
The man said that a stranger named Bob approached him at his house at approximately 4 p.m. and said that he could fix the cracks on the man's property for $79 per pound of materials used. He also said he would not charge the man for labor.
The man agreed and Bob finished the work within an hour. The man came out of his house at approximately 5 p.m. to discuss payment with the worker. Bob asked for $900 for the work.
The man said that the price was too high, so Bob settled for $390. The man agreed and asked for a bill or at least the worker's full name. He replied that his name was Bob and that was all the man needed to know.
The two started a verbal argument about the price and Bob yelled a racial slur at the man. He stormed off the property into his dark gray pickup truck and drove away northbound on Maple Avenue.
The man called the police because he worried that Bob would return for money or to cause damage to either the property or harm to the man himself.
He described Bob as an African-American male in his mid-60s wearing pants and a T-shirt. He could not write down Bob's license plate before he drove away from his house.
