MILLBURY, Mass. — As Renee King opened her new business, The Queen's Cups, on Friday in Millbury, customers lined up all morning and into the afternoon to get a taste at her new cupcake bakery.
Patrons were backed out the door and onto the sidewalk just after noon as word quickly spread about the tasty treats. King, with the help of family members, was off to a great start at her new location at 238 Millbury Ave. at Wheelock Avenue.
"I've been baking for two days, getting ready for the opening. But I don't think we were prepared for this," she said, pointing to the crowd inside the store. "We're already running out of some of the cupcakes, which I've been baking all day as well trying to keep up with the demand."
As soon as one tray of cupcakes was placed on the shelf, the treats were quickly gone as residents and friends bought the tasty treats by the boxful.
She has 15 types of cupcakes on the menu and may add more. Her father is a food service director but did all the construction work inside the shop. Her mother, Barbara, is a teacher and sports coach at BVT but took a day off to help out for the opening.
Many former and current Millbury athletes were on hand to support King, who played and coaches basketball as well.
"Isn't this fantastic?" King asked while tying up boxes of cupcakes at the counter. "I can't believe it has been so busy here today, but I wouldn't have missed this for the world."
The made-from-scratch cupcakes are already a hit in Millbury. King laughed and said, "I arrived here at 6 this morning to start baking for the day and before 8 (opening time) there were two boys waiting by the door, wanting to be the first customers."
